HORS PISTE

Friday, 25 September 2020 by admin

Virtual Showing
2018 | France | 6 min | Animated
Directors: Léo Brunel, Camille Jalabert, Loris Cavalier, Oscar Malet
Producer: Julien Deparis

The story of mountain rescue duo, Salami and Parmesan, as their attempts to rescue a skier stranded on the top of an imposing mountain, do not go to plan. Hors Piste is a riotous six-minute animation, following the pair as their endeavors to save the imperiled (known as The Wounded) leads them from hilarious set-piece to hilarious set-piece. From the moment their helicopter slowly slides from the top of the mountain, you know exactly how this film will play out, but it does detract from the enjoyment it brings, at all. In fact, the anticipation of ‘what next’ is all part of the fun.

Gay Chorus Deep South

Friday, 25 September 2020 by admin

Virtual Showing
2019 | USA | 100 min | Documentary
Director: David Charles Rodrigues

Led by Gay Chorus Conductor Dr. Tim Seelig and joined by The Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir; the tour brings a message of music, love and acceptance to communities and individuals confronting intolerance. Over 300 singers travelled from Mississippi to Tennessee through the Carolinas and over the bridge in Selma. They performed in churches, community centers and concert halls in hopes of uniting us in a time of difference. The journey also challenges Tim and other Chorus members who fled the South to confront their own fears, pain and prejudices on a journey towards reconciliation. The conversations and connections that emerge offer a glimpse of a less divided America, where the things that divide us—faith, politics, sexual identity—are set aside by the soaring power of music, humanity and a little drag.

Freaks of Nurture is an animated short about a neurotic mother-daughter relationship inspired by the filmmaker’s own unorthodox upbringing with her single-parent mom, who is also a foster parent and dog breeder. Self-deprecating and bursting with energy, the film reveals that no matter how grown-up we think we are, we never quite stop craving the love and support of a parent.

FISH & MEN: THE HIGH COST OF CHEAP FISH

Friday, 25 September 2020 by admin

Virtual Showing
2019 | USA | 85 min | Documentary
Directors: Darby Duffin, Adam Jones
Producers: Darby Duffin, Adam Jones, Heidi Zimmerman

Today, 91% of our fish is imported and the U.S. is flooded with six billion tons of imported seafood. Consumers across America eat blissfully unaware of where their seafood is from or the dire consequences that a demand for five species of fish sourced from distant oceans brings to our shores. FISH & MEN exposes the high cost of cheap fish in the modern seafood economy and the forces threatening local fishing communities and public health by revealing how our choices as consumers drives the global seafood trade. But, a new movement is underway – an opportunity to return sustainability to both fish and fishermen. Thriving on local communities, pioneering fishermen and celebrated chefs are leading a revolutionary new model, a ‘Catch of the Day’ revival based on local, seasonal, sustainable fish – introducing consumers to discover new varieties of storied seafood and reconnect us with those who risk their lives to harvest the bounties of the sea.

ENTANGLED

Friday, 25 September 2020 by admin

Virtual Showing
2020 | USA | 75 min | Documentary
Directors: David Abel, Andy Laub

ENTANGLED chronicles the efforts to protect North Atlantic right whales from extinction, the impacts of those efforts on the lobster industry, and how the National Marine Fisheries Service has struggled to balance the vying interests. There are now believed to be fewer than 400 right whales, making them among the planet’s most endangered species. The main threat to their survival, scientists say: millions of lobster lines that stretch from New England up through Atlantic Canada, standard gear for North America’s most valuable fishery. Exacerbating that threat is climate change, which has sparked a collapse in the whale’s food supply in the warming waters of the Gulf of Maine, forcing them to search for food in areas where they had rarely been seen before. As a result, their population has been plummeting.
