The Human Trial

Friday, 26 August 2022 by MONIFF-Admin

92 min

Director: Guy Mossman, Lisa Hepner

Producer: Kristin Lesko, Simon Kilmurry, Lisa Hepner, Jonathan Formica

In 2011, Lisa Hepner and her husband Guy Mossman heard about a radical stem cell treatment for diabetes, a disease that shockingly kills over five million people each year. Driven by a desire to cure Lisa of her own type 1 diabetes (T1D), the filmmakers got unprecedented access to a clinical trial – only the sixth ever stem cell trial in the world. What follows is an intimate decade-long journey with the patients and scientists who risk everything for everybody else. The Human Trial peels back the headlines to show the sweat, passion, and sacrifice behind every breakthrough cure. For the millions of patients suffering around the world, these breakthroughs can’t come fast enough.

I Didn’t See You There

Friday, 26 August 2022 by MONIFF-Admin

Virtual Showing

2022 | United States | 72 min | Documentary

Director: Reid Davenport

Producer:
Keith Wilson
Closed Captioning and Closed Audio Description

As a visibly disabled person, filmmaker Reid Davenport is often either the subject of an unwanted gaze — gawked at by strangers — or paradoxically rendered invisible, ignored or dismissed by society. The arrival of a circus tent just outside his apartment prompts him to consider the history and legacy of the freak show, in which individuals who were deemed atypical were put on display for the amusement and shock of a paying public. Contemplating how this relates to his own filmmaking practice, which explicitly foregrounds disability, Davenport sets out to make a film about how he sees the world from his wheelchair without having to be seen himself.
