WAGING CHANGE

Tuesday, 29 September 2020 by admin

Virtual Showing
2019 | USA | 61 min | Documentary
Director: Abby Ginzberg
Editors: Marta Wohl, Jim McSilver

The majority of people serving food in U.S. restaurants are paid a federal sub-minimum wage of only $2.13 an hour and are forced to depend on tips to feed themselves and their families. WAGING CHANGE exposes the liabilities created by this wage structure — liabilities that existed prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, but which are amplified by the current moment. Women, who hold two-thirds of all tip-based jobs, are especially affected. Their reliance on tips leads to pervasive gender discrimination, sexual assault, and sexual harassment – and prevents many women from speaking up. Further, the sub-minimum tip wage leaves them with barely any support from unemployment in times of crisis.

Featuring Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and others who have mobilized support for the movement, WAGING CHANGE reveals the important role consumers have to play in ending this two-tiered wage system which has already been abolished in seven states.

The Woman Who Loves Giraffes

Tuesday, 29 September 2020 by admin

Virtual Showing
2019 | Canada | 83 min | Documentary
Director: Alison Reid
Producers: Joanne Jackson

In 1956, four years before Jane Goodall ventured into the world of chimpanzees and seven years before Dian Fossey left to work with mountain gorillas, 23-year-old biologist Anne Innis Dagg made an unprecedented solo journey to South Africa to study giraffes in the wild. In THE WOMAN WHO LOVES GIRAFFES Anne (now 86) retraces her steps, and with letters and stunning, original 16mm film footage offers an intimate window into her life as a young woman, juxtaposed with a first hand look at the devastating reality that giraffes are facing today. Both the world’s first ‘giraffologist’, whose research findings ultimately became the foundation for many scientists following in her footsteps, and the species she loves have each experienced triumphs as well as setbacks. THE WOMAN WHO LOVES GIRAFFES gives us a moving perspective on both.

The Last Harvest

Tuesday, 29 September 2020 by admin

Virtual Showing
2018 | USA | 20 min | Documentary
Director: Alexis Spradic
Producers: Michael Pizzo, David Burden, Tieneke Pavesic, Tim Lynch

The average grocery shopper may be surprised to learn that more than 75% of the fresh fruit consumed in the U.S. is completely dependent on hand-harvesting. Despite a rapidly growing $40 billion fresh produce industry, growers are in fear of a viable future as they struggle to find workers to pick the fields. More than $3.1 Billion is missed in economic growth each year as crops are left to rot in abandoned fields.

The Last Harvest offers a rare glimpse into the critical labor shortage problem in the agricultural industry. Hear the stories of those most impacted by this phenomenon and learn how immigration reform, an improved guest worker program, and innovation and collaboration can provide a solution. Let’s inspire a productive dialogue. The future of good food depends on the choices we make today. Our hope is this is not The Last Harvest.
